Tucson Downtown Sertoma Club
Viscount Hotel – 11/17/10
President Tom Sawyer called the meeting to order at 12:03.
Sam Hauert lead the Pledge and Bill Dunn spoke the Invocation.
Rick Kennedy asked for a moment of silence to remember long time Sertoma
friend Ross Swinford who passed away 11-5-2010. He was preceded in death
by his wife Leona earlier this year. She was also a good friend and a
long time member of La Sertoma.
The family is holding a private service and requests that any memorials
be made to a charity of your choice.
Lunch was served and Tom introduced a "mystery guest". Nancy Turner,
Sargent at Arms, had each table ask 2 questions to guess his name. Most
of us paid a fine and Tom Sawyer introduced himself to the group. Our
Pres met him recently and both Toms were amused.
Reminders: December 1- regular meeting with a special lunch. Rudy
Ingersoll is the SOD and his guest is John Carroll, interim
superintendent of TUSD.
December 15th will be the ASDB Christmas Party complete with Santa
The SOD and Speaker was Rick Kennedy to give a "heads-up" on taxes. He
stressed that no one is sure what our new laws will be. Indications are
that at least some of the Bush tax cuts will remain. He pointed out the
"wicked" AMT Tax and the elimination of Real Estate discounts. It
appears that deductions for teachers who buy school supplies and health
care will be in place on AZ tax. Rick suggested that IRAs might be
converted to Roth accounts, but you must talk to a certified person
about your individual situation..
Rick provided us with handouts that gave tips for deductions and
handling charitable donations and thinking ahead for the new tax year.
Keep in mind that changes can be made after the new year and be made
retro for 2009-2010 taxes.
As an aside- Rick was in Germany where the economy is well. He felt that
higher taxes played a part in that stability and as the structure is
consistent, everyone is aware of the tax burden and can plan
accordingly. Something to think about.
If you missed the meeting, you might want to inquire about getting a
copy of the hand-out.
Have an HAPPY THANKSGIVING.
Grace Sawyer
